Short answer

Most Cirencester homes heat with mains gas, so boiler work is the main job here. The old centre is different: it has many solid stone houses, listed buildings and four conservation areas. These affect where a flue, a heat pump or new pipework can go. Grants for low-income households come through Warm and Well.

How do Cirencester homes heat?

Nearly three in four Cirencester households use mains gas alone. In the 2021 Census, 6,799 of the 9,247 households in the 8 town wards did so. That is 73.5 per cent, close to the England figure of 74.0 per cent.

Electric heating is the next most common type, at 11.8 per cent. It is highest in St Michael's ward (20.3 per cent) and Watermoor ward (19.9 per cent), where there are many flats.

Only 189 town households used oil alone. The district is very different. DESNZ estimates that 37.4 per cent of homes in Cotswold District had no gas connection in 2024. That is the highest share of the four councils on this site.

Why do old Cirencester houses lose more heat?

Many houses in the centre have solid stone walls, which lose heat faster than modern cavity walls. Cotswold District Council says solid walls are normal in buildings from before 1919.

The Valuation Office Agency counts homes by build date. In the Cirencester Central area, 36.2 per cent were built before 1919. In Cirencester South and in Cirencester East and Stratton, the figure is about 5 per cent.

For a heat pump, this difference matters. A room-by-room heat loss survey sets the size of the unit and the radiators. Ask each engineer to show you the survey in the quote.

What planning rules affect heating work in the town?

Cirencester has four conservation areas: Town Centre, The Park, South, and Gloucester Street and River Walk. The town centre is outside the Cotswolds National Landscape.

In a conservation area, a new flue on a road-facing front or side of the house needs planning permission. An air source heat pump there must not sit on a wall or roof that faces a road.

A listed house has no permitted development right for a heat pump, and an oil tank in its grounds also needs permission. Ask the council before any visible change.

Questions

Can I get a grant for a heat pump in Cirencester?

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme gives £7,500 towards an air or ground source heat pump. Warm and Well also runs the Warm Homes Local Grant. It helps homes with an EPC of D to G and an income under £36,000.

Who gives free heating advice in Cirencester?

Warm and Well, run by Severn Wye Energy Agency for Cotswold District Council. Its free line is 0800 500 3076, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

Does a chimney I do not use need care?

Yes. Cotswold District Council says a disused chimney can make a house feel damp and cold. It suggests repair, and a cowl or a chimney balloon.
