Short answer
Burford is largely off the gas grid. Only about 1 in 10 households use mains gas alone, and four in ten use oil. Many homes are old and listed. Oil boilers, tank work and heat pumps are the main jobs. Oxfordshire grant funding is closed, but the national heat pump grant is open.

Is Burford on mains gas?
Mostly not. In the 2021 Census, only 85 of the 888 households in Burford ward used mains gas alone. That is 9.6 per cent, against 74.0 per cent for England.
Oil heated 366 households, or 41.2 per cent. Electric heating alone heated 20.4 per cent, and tank or bottled gas 4.6 per cent.
Burford also had a high share of renewable heating. Some 46 households (5.2 per cent) used renewable energy alone, such as a heat pump.
How old are Burford homes?
Many are very old. In the Burford and Brize Norton area, 35.0 per cent of homes on the Council Tax list were built before 1900.
Old stone houses with solid walls need a careful heat loss survey before a heat pump. Larger radiators or underfloor heating can let the pump run at a lower, more efficient temperature.
Burford is inside the Cotswolds National Landscape, and its centre is a conservation area. A flue or a heat pump that faces a road needs more care there.
What rules apply to oil tanks near the Windrush?
The River Windrush runs along the foot of the town. A tank within 10 metres of it, or of a stream or ditch that feeds it, needs secondary containment.
A bund must hold at least 110 per cent of the largest tank. A tank that holds 3,500 litres or less on a house that is not listed is usually permitted development.
In the National Landscape, a tank must not sit between a side wall and the boundary. A listed house needs permission for any tank.
Does the Burford conservation area affect heating work?
Yes. West Oxfordshire District Council made Burford a conservation area in 1970, one of the first in the district. It publishes the boundary map.
In the conservation area, a heat pump must not stand on a wall or roof that faces a road. A new flue on a road-facing front or side wall needs planning permission.
About 15 per cent of Burford households used two or more types of heating in 2021. Ask the engineer to service every appliance.
Questions
How much can I get to swap an oil boiler for a heat pump?
GOV.UK lists £7,500, plus £1,500 until March 2027 for homes with oil or LPG and no mains gas. That is up to £9,000.
Is the Oxfordshire Warm Homes Local Grant open in Burford?
No. Oxfordshire County Council says it is closed to new applications. Better Housing Better Health gives free advice on 0800 107 0044.
Can I get a grant for a biomass boiler in Burford?
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme gives £5,000 for a biomass boiler in a rural home off the gas grid. The boiler needs an emissions certificate.
