How much does it cost to replace an oil tank?

Short answer

A Wiltshire tank firm publishes £1,800 to £3,500 for a bunded oil tank, supplied and fitted. Two firms quoted from about £2,500 for a 1,200 litre tank. Removal of the old tank can cost £250 to £1,200 on its own. We found no Cotswold firm that publishes a price. Get at least three written quotes.

What removal costs

Removal of an old tank costs from about £250 to £1,200 on its own. Two firms publish very different ranges. Wiltshire Oil Tanks gives £250 to £600, and Eco Tank Services gives £800 to £1,200 for Gloucestershire and the Cotswolds.

The cost depends on the size and type of tank, how much oil and sludge is left, and access. A steel or concrete tank costs more to take away.

What makes a tank cost more in the Cotswolds

A tank near water costs more to site safely. Many Cotswold homes are near streams, springs or wells. Approved Document J needs a bund within 10 metres of water or 50 metres of a well, borehole or spring.

Fire protection adds cost. A tank less than 1.8 metres from the house, or 760 millimetres from a boundary, needs a fire wall or barrier.

A new base adds cost if the old one is cracked, too small or not level.

Access matters. A tank behind a house with no side path may need to go over a wall or through the house.

In a conservation area or the garden of a listed building, a tank in a new place can need consent.

How to compare tank quotes

Prices vary; get at least three written quotes. Send each firm photos of the tank, the base and the route from the road.

  • Ask for the tank size, make and the length of its warranty.
  • Ask if the price includes removal of the old tank and any oil left in it.
  • Ask if the base, fire protection and new oil line are in the price.
  • Check the technician on the OFTEC register, so they can self-certify the work.
  • Ask if the price includes VAT.

Questions

How long does an oil tank last?

It depends on the tank and its care. Check it each year for cracks, bulges, rust and leaks. Replace it if you see damage.

Do I need a bunded tank?

Often yes. Approved Document J needs a bund for tanks over 2,500 litres, and for tanks near water, wells, springs or open drains. Most new tanks have one built in.

Does the oil storage law apply to my home tank?

Only if it holds 3,501 litres or more. GOV.UK says smaller tanks at a single home are outside those rules, but Part J still applies.
