What makes a service cost more

Oil boilers cost more to service. The technician changes the nozzle and filter and cleans more parts, so the visit takes longer.

Parts are usually extra. A service price covers the labour and the checks, not new parts found to be faulty.

Travel can add cost in rural areas. Ask if the firm charges extra for villages far from its base.

More appliances cost more. A landlord check covers every gas appliance the landlord provides, such as a boiler, a fire and a hob.

How to compare service quotes

Prices vary; get at least three quotes. Tell each firm the fuel, the boiler make and the number of gas appliances.

  • Ask if the price includes VAT.
  • Ask if the price covers a flue gas analysis and the maker's service checks.
  • Ask what a second appliance or a landlord certificate adds.
  • Check the engineer on the Gas Safe Register, or OFTEC for oil.

Questions

Why is an oil boiler service dearer than a gas one?

It takes longer. The technician usually changes the nozzle and filter and cleans the burner and chamber. The local prices above show oil services at £130 to £155 plus VAT.

Do I need a yearly service by law?

Not as an owner-occupier. HSE advises a service at least once a year. Landlords must have a yearly gas safety check by law.

Is a gas safety certificate the same as a service?

No. The certificate records a safety check. A service also cleans and adjusts the boiler. Many firms do both in one visit for a combined price.
